Principal's Update 12-13-2013 and 12-20-2013

Our last two weeks leading up to winter break were very busy!

On Monday, December 9th our students enjoyed an all school assembly that was sponsored by the WC PTO! The performance was put on by Culture Shock Chicago and the purpose was for students to hear the message of the benefits of a healthy, drug-free, active lifestyle. The students really enjoyed the performance as you can see from the pictures in the slideshow below!

Our Students of the Month from the month of November enjoyed Pizza with the Principal on Thursday, December 12th! These students were chosen either by their teacher or their classmates for this honor. Individuals who are nominated for Student of the Month have demonstrated an ability to follow the school rules, be caring citizens, and show academic responsibility. November students of the month were as follows:

During the weeks leading up to Winter Break we held a canned food drive for our school community to donate non-perishable items to the West Suburban Food Pantry. We had excellent participation with this drive and the items donated will directly benefit families in Woodridge this winter. In addition, the Willow Creek staff donated toys to be passed out to children whose families visited the pantry over the holiday season.

The WC Student Council sponsored a Candy Cane sale during our last week before break. Students were able to purchase candy canes during the lunch hour and all proceeds were donated to help with relief efforts for victims of the tornado in Washington, IL that devastated the town a few weeks earlier. Our students raised over $500 with this fundraiser! Thank you to everyone who helped support it!

On our last day of school before winter break, students celebrated the holiday season with an assembly where our chorus performed holiday songs and they had our winter parties that were planned by our room parents! Thank you to all of our parents who planned the parties or donated items for the parties! The students truly enjoyed themselves! Also, thank you to our PTO who covered the funds for the parties for all classes this year! Check out the slideshow from the parties below!

All families should have received a notification by now that school is closed tomorrow, Monday, January 6th due to extreme weather conditions. Our school administration will continue to monitor the conditions for Tuesday and will make decisions regarding school on Tuesday accordingly. You can always check the District #68 website and social media or listen to key Chicagoland television and radio outlets for district information regarding school closings as well. I have posted information regarding school closings that was sent home with students earlier this year, as well as, our cold weather procedures on flyers in our school Peachjar, so please be sure to read those details and send your children to school prepared for outdoor recess should weather permit when school is in session.

The District #68 Gifted Screening and Nomination process for next school year will begin on Monday, January 6th. Please see the flyer that I have posted to our Peachjar with more information regarding this process. A letter will also be sent home with students in grades 2 and 6 this coming week, as all students in those two grade levels will be screened for the program.

This coming Friday, January 10th is our PTO Free Movie Night! The movie that will be shown this year is Hoodwinked. Please note, adults MUST stay with their children during the movie. Details regarding this event can be found on the flyer posted to the Peachjar! PTO is still looking for volunteers for this event. Volunteers can sign up by clicking on the link to VolunteerSpot, entering an e-mail address, and choosing a volunteer time slot. The VolunteerSpot does not share your e-mail address with anyone!
