Principal's Update 05-09-2014, 05-16-2014, and 05-23-2014

The month of May has been flying by us! Our staff and students have been busy this past three weeks!

Our first full week in May was Teacher Appreciation Week! The PTO and parents of Willow Creek made this a truly special week for our teachers and staff! We started off the week with an awesome lunch and the kind words and gestures continued all week! Thank you to everyone for their appreciation and continued support! I know our teachers truly felt the love and appreciation for their hard work that week!

Two of our teachers are retiring at the end of this year, Mrs. Franson and Mrs. Mehok! They received special gifts from the WC PTO at the teacher appreciation luncheon  and were also recognized at a WEA Retirement Tea during the first week of May! Thank you to both of them for all of their hard work and years of service to Willow Creek!

Friday, May 9th was our annual Field Day! Despite the early morning rain, it turned out to be a beautiful day and our students were able to participate in the event in the afternoon! We had an excellent field day planned by Mrs. Bailey! Thank you to Mrs. Bailey and all of our parent volunteers who made this day possible and so enjoyable for our students!!

Our second full week in May was more calm, but last week was certainly a busy one! We kicked off the week celebrating our students of the month for April and finished off the week celebrating our students of the month for May! These students were chosen either by their teacher or their classmates for this honor. Individuals who are nominated for Student of the Month have demonstrated an ability to follow the school rules, be caring citizens, and show academic responsibility.

Last Monday also marked another celebration for our retiring teachers who were honored by the Board of Education at the BOE meeting. Students from Mrs. Mehok's 5th grade class and Mrs. Franson's 6th grade class led the board members and the audience in the pledge!

Our kindergarteners participated in a practice lunch last Tuesday in order to prepare for next year when they will be at school all day! The students enjoyed having lunch at school and did a great job following the lunchroom procedures!

Both first and second year band students performed in their final concert of the year last Tuesday evening! The students did an excellent job demonstrating the progress they have made this year! Willow Creek parent, Maryann Flock, also directed a guest band, New Horizons Band, during the concert as well!

Students from all grade levels across the school participated in our Science Fair last Thursday evening! The students did a great job sharing the projects they completed at home with fellow students and Willow Creek families! It was exciting to see so many students who were interested about science and eager to articulate their learning! A special "Thank You" goes to Mrs. Chapman and Mrs. Durkin who made the Science Fair possible!

Last Friday, our kindergarteners participated in an in-school field trip that was led by the DuPage Children's Museam! The experience connected to what the students have learned in math this year, as they used two dimensionsal shapes to make three dimensional shapes and then put them together to design their own unique creations! Thank you to all of the parents who came to assist with this learning opportunity for our students!

Our PTO is currently holding our last Box Top Collection of the year. We are not having a contest, but are hoping to collect any Box Tops that may expire this summer in order to ensure that we are able to collect money for them! Willow Creek students and families earned over $1,500 this year by collecting and turning in Box Tops! Thank you to all of our families who have contributed! As a celebration of our success with these collections, our PTO will be providing freeze pops for all students before the end of the school year!

Now that the weather has finally changed and we have spring/summer temperatures, please be sure that your child comes appropriately dressed for school. I have included some regulations from our student handbook below that stand out particularly for warmer weather. It is especially important that students have gym shoes for recess and P.E. so they can safely participate in physical activity each day!
  • Flip Flops are Prohibited
  • Bare Midriffs, See-Through Garmets, Clothing that Bears the Chest (shirts that are strapless or have spaghetti straps), Tube Tops and Halter Tops are Prohibited
  • Skirts or Shorts More Than 6 inches Above the Knee are Prohibited
