Principal's Update 11-22-2013 and 12-06-2013

The week leading up to Thanksgiving Break and the week after Thanksgiving Break were both full of exciting activities for the students and staff of Willow Creek!

On Monday, November 18th, Willow Creek School was well represented at the Board of Education Meeting! Students who participated in the JJH Musical performed a song for the Board at the start of the meeting and a few WC students were a part of that! In honor of American Education Week, the Woodridge Education Association and the Woodridge Education Support Staff were presented with certificates of appreciation by the Board. Willow Creek staff members Barb Franson, 6th Grade Teacher, and Missey Barnes, Secretary, were present to accept the certificates on behalf of the two groups. In addition, several of our students in the Gifted Program and our new Gifted Specialist, Diana Parker, presented to the Board about the new program.

Bilingual parents from across District #68, including parents from Willow Creek School, attended a Navigating the American Education System Meeting on Tuesday, November 19th. During this meeting, parents learned about how to support their students in school and their performance on our Star Benchmark Assessments.

The students who are in both 1st Year and 2nd Year Band performed in their first concert of the year on Wednesday, November 20th! The students did an excellent job and were excited to show off the hard work they have been doing thus far this year!

Our school celebrated the reading accomplishments of our students on the Friday before Thanksgiving Break with our Accelerated Reader Assembly! During this assembly, students who met their fist quarter reading goals were recognized, as well as, our students who were our Most Improved or Top Readers for their classrooms. When students reach 25%, 50%, 75%, 100%, and 125% of their goal, they are given a raffle ticket to place in the raffle that is drawn for prizes during the assembly as well. I strongly encourage students to read over Winter Break in order to continue to work towards their second quarter goals. Students goals are set according to their individual reading levels, and all students are encouraged to read and complete their AR tests with 85% accuracy. As a school, we have a goal for 85% of our students to read with 85% accuracy each quarter!

Thank you to all of our parents who attended Parent/Teacher Conferences during the week of Thanksgiving! I was thrilled to see so many parents in attendance to meet with their child's teacher to discuss the progress that students are making. Please continue to communicate with our staff in order to ensure that your child is successful and learning and growing throughout the school year. You are welcome to e-mail or call your child's teacher at anytime with questions or to discuss progress. The second round of Parent/Teacher Conferences will occur in the very beginning of May this year. Our teachers will be continuing to keep parents in the loop with their newsletters and they will be continuing to work to update their grade books by posting grades within a week of the date the assignments are due. As a result, parents can continue to check students' progress in Skyward on a regular basis or sign up for e-mail updates to receive notifications of grades/assignments as well.

This past Thursday was our annual Barnes and Noble Family Reading Night! Once again, our school had an excellent turn out! It was great to see so many students and their families at Barnes and Noble to listen to our staff read several Fairy Tales and perform a Reader's Theatre! Thank you also to our staff who attended the event and brought their own families to share in the fun! I am so happy to see our community come together to embrace reading and support our school to raise funds at the same time!

On Saturday, our 5th and 6th Grade Chorus joined several other schools from around Chicagoland to sing three holiday songs at the Chicago Wolves Game! The students did an excellent job and really enjoyed the hockey game as well! A huge "Thank You" goes out to Mrs. Hector who coordinated this event and prepared our students for the performance. Thank you also to our parents and Willow Creek families that supported the event and went out to see the students perform and join in the fun of attending the game!

Willow Creek staff and students will be participating in collections for the West Suburban Food Pantry this month. Students may bring in donations of nonperishable items through December 19th. Collection boxes are currently located in the front hallway where students enter the building each day. Students can drop off items to those boxes when they come in to school. All collections will then be dropped off at the pantry on the afternoon of the 19th. Please check out the flyer regarding this food drive that has been posted to our Peachjar.

There is currently an E-Box Top Contest going on through PTO! Check out the flyer that has been posted to the Peachjar for more information! If you register, you can earn money for our school while shopping online this holiday season and basically anytime!
