On Wednesday, December 5th our students participated in an assembly called "Holidays Around the World." During the assembly, our students learned about various holidays that are celebrated this time of year by different people around the world. Students participated in activities that taught them about and highlighted the traditions of Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, and the Chinese New Year. Check out the slide show and video of the assembly below. There were two performances, one in the morning and one in the afternoon in order for more students to be able to participate in the activities throughout the assembly. This was an excellent, fun learning opportunity for all of our students and staff!
Thursday, December 6th was also an enjoyable day for the staff and students of Willow Creek. Our community met at the Barnes and Noble in Bolingbrook for an evening of storytelling. Willow Creek staff members read books, poems, and jokes to the students throughout the evening. The storytelling hour was concluded with a Reader's Theatre performed by WC Staff. Many families took advantage of the opportunity to complete some holiday shopping, which also benefited our school, as we received a portion of the sales which will enable our school to purchase new books to add to our school library! Thank you to all families who joined us for this evening of fun and contributed to the raising of funds/resources for our school.

Last Friday, parents should have received a School Messenger e-mail message from our Superintendent, Dr. Cathy Skinner. I have included a link to her message to our community regarding the tragedy that took place at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. I have also included a few links for adults about talking with students about such tragedies. One article gives some guidelines based on students' age. Our school staff are using these general guidelines in order to appropriately respond to students should questions come up at school, but please know that we are also encouraging students to be sure to talk with their parents. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Our deepest condolences are going out to the family, friends, and community of Sandy Hook Elementary School at this time.
