Principal's Update 10-31-2014

We had another fun and busy week at Willow Creek!

Our staff and students celebrated Red Ribbon Week! This week is designed to unite and take a visible stand against drugs. Students were encouraged to show their personal commitment to a drug-free lifestyle through wearing the symbol of the Red Ribbon and by participating in the activities planned by our staff. This is a perfect time for you to follow up with your child(ren) to talk with them about the importance of remaining drug free.

Both 4th Grade and 1st Grade had special visitors to their classrooms on Tuesday! In the morning, a Scientist from Fermilab spent time with our fourth grade students. The students completed a Marshmallow/Spaghetti Tower Challenge with the scientist! Students worked in teams to try and construct a tower using only the materials provided by the scientist. The students had to build their creations within other certain limitations as well! There certainly was a lot of problem solving going on as our students attempted to meet the challenge! In the afternoon, Willow Creek parent, Mr. DiNaso, visited the 1st Graders with his collection of spiders! The students learned about spiders in class and as a result of Mr. DiNaso's visit, they were able to see and learn even more about spiders in person!!

On Thursday, we completed our October Bulldog Group meetings! Our Bulldog groups are an opportunity for all students in our school to participate in activities and lessons with a small group of students of about 8-10 and an adult in our building who is not their classroom teacher. For example, students in 4th grade may be in a group with a second grade teacher and other 4th grade students. All adults in our school are a part of our Bulldog Groups including Office Staff and Support Staff. The purpose of our Bulldog Groups is for our students to build relationships with multiple adults within our school and to learn important life lessons about social skills and making good decisions. This month, our lesson was about personal space. We discussed with students the definitition of personal space and why it is important to respect the personal space of others. We also talked about what to do when someone invades your personal space and how to gauge whether or not you are making someone else feel uncormfortable by entering their personal space.

Friday was an important day for our staff to meet to work on improving our school. Teachers participated in conversations about providing services for students who need various levels of support with both behavior and academics throughout our school. They also attended sessions that focused on implementing our new writing curriculum, integraring technology into our classrooms, refining math instruction, or they participated in department meetings.

This weekend marked the time for our clocks to fall back one hour! Hopefully everyone enjoyed an extra hour of sleep and reset those clocks in order to be on time for school on Monday!
