Principal's Update 02-15-2013 and 02-22-2013

Our students were full of excitement during the week of Valentine's Day!! The student council held a Sour Lips Sucker sale that was a huge hit with the student body! Students enjoyed exchanging Valentine cards on Thursday and they also enjoyed either some festive treats or activities in their classrooms!

On Tuesday, February 12th our 5th and 6th grade band students performed in the Winterfest Concert. They did a fantastic job and impressed the entire audience! Willow Creek school was well represented and it was a joy to listen to their music! I have also included a link to the February Band Beats Newsletter for any interested parents to read.

The 6th grade students throughout the district, including the 6th graders at Willow Creek, all participated in the student component of the 5Essentials Survey this past week. The student component of the survey is targeted for children in grades 6th - 8th  grade, so all Jefferson students will also be taking the survey before March 31st. All district parents are also encouraged to complete the survey by March 31st. Please click on the link to the directions for the survey and take a few minutes to complete the survey if you have not done so already. Parent input is an important component of the information we receive as a district and a school as a result of the survey.

February is Black History Month and our PTO sponsored a Jabali African Acrobats Assembly on Thursday. Direct from Mombassa, Kenya, these phenomenal acrobats performed routines and dances that combined acrobatic feats with East African musical and cultural traditions to create a full-stage theatrical cirque extravaganza!

Students in grades 4th-6th who read three or more Rebecca Caudill books this year were invited to a Rebecca Caudill Voting Party in the LRC this week. The students voted for their favorite book of the ones that they read on the list. Our school votes will then be reported and contribute to help determining the winning book for the entire state. We had so many students who were invited to the voting party that we actually had to have two parties!! Students enjoyed treats and also participated in a trivia game that was held just like the Battle of the Books Contest. A big "Thank You" to Mrs. Thygesen and Mrs. Bielawa for organizing and hosting the party for our students!

On Friday, our first graders had a special guest teacher who came to teach them Yoga! Mrs. Schmitz, parent of a first grade student, led the students in a yoga class where they learned various yoga poses and practiced them together during PE class with Mrs. Bailey!
