Principal's Update 09-07-2012

A welcome back letter went home with students early in the week and has also been posted to the Principal's page of our school website. If for some reason, you did not receive the letter via your child's backpack please check it out online.

Information regarding this year's Fun Run was also distributed to students this week. Please consider coming out and volunteering to help with our first fundraiser of the year. All funds raised for this event go directly to the school, making it our best fundraiser of the year! This is also a fun and exciting day for our students and staff. I know parents will definitely enjoying being a part of the day! The Fun Run is being held on Friday, September 28th.

Our sixth grade morning announcers for this year were chosen this week. Congratulations to our five announcers and two alternates: Kaitlyn F., Scottlyn W., Mikayla A., Dominique Z., Sam V., Claudia K., and Cynthia B.  These students will take turns leading our school in the pledge of allegiance, sharing the lunch choices for the day, informing the school of any special events or happenings in the building, and sharing the names of students who are celebrating birthdays each day.

Due to the rain we experienced on Friday morning, the kindergarten picnic was postponed. As a result, it has been rescheduled for this coming Friday, September 14th. Fliers will be distributed to kindergarten parents this week regarding the rescheduled event!

This coming Thursday, September 13th we will be hosting our Parent Curriculum Night. Please be sure to join us for this event as it is a critical contact for our teachers and parents as we start the new school year. Teachers will share grade level curriculum, classroom expectations, homework policies, and grading policies among other things about their classrooms or grade level. This evening is an excellent opportunity to meet your children's teacher and learn about how they plan to work with the students in their classroom throughout the year. Teachers will also share how to best communicate with them and how they plan to communicate with you as well. Many teachers will also share information about grade level field trips or ways that parents can get involved in the classroom. There will be two sessions, so families with multiple students in the building will have the opportunity to hear the classroom presentations from multiple teachers.

The three school expectations that make up what we call "The Willow Creek Way" and the "Skill Blitz" we completed on our first day of school are part of the Positive Behavior Intervention System (PBIS) that we are implementing this year with students. PBIS is designed to explicitly teach students behaviors that are appropriate for school, just as we explicitly teach academics. It also focuses on promoting the positive behaviors that we see students demonstrate throughout the day. As a result, we are using what we call "Positive Paws" to recognize students when we see them demonstrating the "Willow Creek Way" throughout the building. The "Positive Paws" are designed so that they can be cut in half. One half is sent home with the child to show their family that they earned one and the other half is entered into a weekly raffle. All "Positive Paws" are compiled each week and used towards our entire school goal where all students are contributing to an all school reward for behavior. The picture is of the students whose names were drawn this week in our Friday "Positive Paw" drawing and the slideshow is of the students whose names were drawn the first week!
