We completed multiple safety drills this week including a fire drill with the Woodridge/Lisle Fire Department and a lockdown drill with the Woodridge Police Department. Our students and staff did a great job with these drills and the officers were extremely complimentary of our students, especially after the fire drill! The firemen commented on what a great job our students did exiting the building in an orderly fashion and staying quiet. It was great to hear the positive feedback about our students from individuals who see many students at many different schools. It was obvious that our students took the drills seriously and understood the importance of practicing the drills the right way.
October is fire prevention month and I encourage parents to talk with their children at home about a plan for what to do in case of a fire in the home. Just as we practice at school, it is good for students to practice and know exactly what to do in an emergency situation at home.
On Tuesday, our PTO hosted an assembly for our students about bullying. During the assembly, students learned about the types of bullying and how to respond to bullies. The presenter taught students that if they witness a bully situation to take action while staying safe using the acronym SAFE: Stand tall and speak up, Ask for help, Figure out your options and End it calmly by remaining cool and in control. Also, students were taught how to respond and how to be a HERO - Help out, Empathize, Report and create Open communication.
Thank you to our parents who attended the PTO meeting on Tuesday! There are several upcoming events that our PTO has planned for our students this month, including our Halloween Dance on Friday, October 30th. Volunteers are still needed to make this event a success! We will also be having a Supper Club on Thursday, October 29th from 4-8 p.m. at the Panera on 75th Street in Woodridge. When families show the flyer that evening that has been posted to the Peachjar or sent home with students, a portion of the proceeds from the bill will be donated to Willow Creek PTO!!
There was an information meeting for parents last Thursday regarding the new standards based report cards that our district will be switching to this year for students in grades K-6. If you were unable to attend the meeting, but want to learn about standards based reporting, Assistant Superintendent Greg Wolcott, will be at Willow Creek on Tuesday, November 3rd before the PTO meeting to talk with parents.
