Principal's Update 12-05-2014

December is here and I can't believe we are already one week in! Our first week back from Thanksgiving Break was a busy one!

Orders from our Market Day Catalog Sales should have been picked up last Tuesday! Anyone who still needs to pick up their order should contact the front office! Thank you to Annie Bleau, who coordinated the sale!

Thursday was our annual Barnes and Noble Family Reading Night at the B&N in Bolingbrook! Thank you to all of the families who came out to join us! Our teachers had fun performing our Reader's Theatre and reading a special selection of stories to our students and their younger siblings! A percentage of each purchase where Willow Creek School was mentioned will go back to our school! Online purchases can be submitted through December 10th and our school will still receive a percentage of the purchase if the Bookfair ID 11500485 is entered at checkout! Thank you to Nicole Denigris, Tina Murphy, and Mrs. Davis for coordinating the event!

It appears that Winter is officially hear and is looking like some cold and snowy weather is in our future. As a result, please be sure to send your child to school prepared to be outside for the thirty minute recess period. Students should always have a winter coat, hat, gloves, and scarves! In addition, children who wish to play in the snow when it arrives will need to have both boots and snow pants in order to go into the snow. Students who are not properly prepared for the snow will be required to stay on the blacktop at recess, as we do not want them to get too wet if they are not properly dressed.  If the temperature or wind chill are below zero, we will have indoor recess, but anytime it is above zero, the students will be outside! I also recommend that students wear layers in order to be able to take sweatshirts or sweaters on and off for recess and while inside the building.

Emergency closing procedures for extreme weather can be located on our school website by clicking on this link to the page. Parents can expect to receive an automated message from the school district via phone and e-mail if school is closed. Information will also be posted on the district homepage, Facebook page, and Twitter feed. In addition, local television and radio stations typically share school closings between 6:30 and 8:30 a.m.

The Willow Creek Student Council will be conducting Penny Wars this week. All funds raised will be donated to the DuPage Food Pantry in order to assist families in need this winter. Student Council will also be selling Candy Canes during the lunch hour for students on December 16th-18th. Fliers regarding both events are being sent home with students.

Initial information regarding our upcoming Gifted Programming nominations has been posted to the Peachjar. All students in grades 2 and 6 are automatically screened for the program. Parents of students in these two grades will receive a letter with details in early January. For students in other grades to be screened, a student must be nominated by a teacher or parent. Nominations will be open Monday, January 5, 2015. Completed nominations must be received in the school office or postmarked no later than Friday, January 30, 2015. No action is required for students who are already a part of the gifted program. Please remember Gifted Programming begins in third grade. Nomination forms can be found in the Gifted Services section (>Teaching&Learning>Curriculum&Instruction) of the district website.

Permission slips for Session #2 of our after school clubs will be sent home with students this week. The space in these clubs is limited and students will be accepted into the clubs on a first come, first serve basis. Completed permission slips are due back by Monday, December 15th in order for a student to be considered for the club if space is available.
